Pickleball in Wales: The Current Picture
Welsh pickleball runs on four types of venue:
- Council leisure centres — Halo (Hereford + Powys borders), Aura Leisure (North Wales), Freedom Leisure (South Wales), and local-authority operators running weekly sessions.
- School halls and community centres — volunteer-led sessions at village halls, primary schools and secondary-school sports halls.
- Tennis and bowls clubs adding pickleball — Benllech Bowls & Tennis & Pickleball Club (Anglesey), Crickhowell Sports Association, Monmouth Tennis Club.
- University and college sports centres — particularly in Bangor and Cardiff areas.
This mirrors the Scottish and NI pattern more than the English model — community-facility-first, rather than dedicated private clubs.
South Wales Pickleball (Swansea, Cardiff, Newport)
Swansea and the south-west lead Welsh pickleball with 24 venues across Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot and Ceredigion:
- LC2 — Oystermouth Rd, Maritime Quarter, Swansea, SA1 3ST. Major Swansea leisure centre with regular pickleball.
- Sports Centre (Gower College) — Tycoch Rd, Sketty, SA2 9EB.
- Aberaeron Leisure Centre — South Rd, Aberaeron, SA46 0DP.
- Glynneath Town Hall — Heathfield Avenue, Glynneath, Neath, SA11 5AH.
- Fishguard Leisure Centre — SA65 9DT.
Plus ~19 more community and leisure-centre venues across SA-postcode South Wales.
North Wales & Anglesey
North Wales is where Welsh pickleball is genuinely thriving — 21 venues, with Anglesey especially active.
- Brailsford — Ffriddoedd Rd, Bangor, LL57 2EH (Bangor University sports).
- Canolfan Brailsford Gym / Prifysgol Bangor University — Ffriddoedd Rd, LL57 2EH.
- Byw'n Iach Bangor — Garth Rd, Bangor, LL57 2SD.
- MIXOPOLY Bangor Cricket Clubs — Llandegai Rd, LL57 4HR.
- Plas Arthur — 1 Glanhwfa Rd, Llangefni, LL77 7QX (Anglesey).
- David Hughes Leisure Centre — Pentraeth Rd, Menai Bridge, LL59 5SS.
- Benllech Bowls & Tennis & Pickleball Club — Benllech, LL74 8AE. One of the few explicitly pickleball-named Welsh venues.
- Amlwch Leisure Centre — LL68 9PE.
- Queensway Stadium — Wrexham LL13 8UH.
- Plas Madoc Leisure Centre — Llangollen Rd, Acrefair, Wrexham LL14 3HL.
Plus 11 more across Gwynedd, Conwy and Denbighshire. Anglesey in particular has an unusually strong pickleball community for its population — worth the trip from mainland North Wales if you want a broader social scene.
Mid Wales Pickleball
Mid Wales (SY and LD postcodes) pickleball overlaps the Welsh Borders and Shropshire — 19 venues in our dataset, many right on the border:
- Powys and Ceredigion community venues
- Leisure centres in Newtown, Welshpool, Brecon
- Community halls across rural Mid Wales
Some SY-postcode venues are technically in Shropshire — the database captures both sides of the porous Welsh/Shropshire border because players cross it weekly.
Cardiff and the South-East
- Southgate Park — Llantrisant CF72 8DJ.
- 46 Lowerdale Drive — Pontyclun, CF72 8DY.
- Parc Y Dwrlyn Fields — Penuel Rd, Pentyrch, Cardiff CF15 9QJ.
- Penarth Leisure Centre — Andrew Rd, Cogan, CF64 2NS.
- Treorchy Comprehensive School — Treorchy, CF42 6UL.
Plus community sessions across Bridgend, Vale of Glamorgan, Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the Valleys.

- Newport International Sports Village — Velodrome Way, NP19 4RA.
- Monmouth Leisure Centre — Old Dixton Rd, NP25 3DP.
- Monmouth Tennis Club — Blestium Street, NP25 3AF.
Plus 6 more Newport/Monmouthshire/Blaenau Gwent community venues.
PickleB Welsh Open and Competition
The PickleB Welsh Open is the flagship Welsh pickleball tournament, running annually and drawing UK-wide entries including Scottish, NI and Irish players. Pickleball Wales coordinates the competition pathway across the country, running sanctioned fixtures through the year.
Cross-border play is common: many Welsh players regularly compete at Pickleball England events including the English Open at NEC Birmingham. DUPR ratings apply across borders, so moving between Welsh, English and all-island Irish tournaments is straightforward.
Costs and What to Bring
- Typical drop-in: £3–£8 per session at most Welsh venues.
- Club memberships: £30–£60/year at venue-led clubs.
- Leisure-centre memberships: Many Welsh councils include pickleball in standard Halo / Aura / Freedom Leisure memberships.
If you're new:
- Most Welsh venues provide loaner paddles — budget £40–£100 for your own when you start playing regularly. See our best pickleball paddles for beginners UK guide.
- Non-marking indoor court shoes are the standard — badminton-style work perfectly.
- Most sessions supply balls.
What's Coming Next
- Pickleball Wales continues to expand sanctioned-club affiliations through 2026.
- North Wales / Anglesey is one of the fastest-growing pickleball sub-regions in the UK — expect further coverage expansion across Conwy, Flintshire, and Wrexham.
- Pickleball is increasingly being added to Welsh council leisure centre programming, particularly in South Wales.
If you run a Welsh pickleball venue or session not listed above, email hello@racketrise.co.uk — I'd rather over-list than miss.
