Asics took the Gel cushioning system that built their tennis and running reputation and dropped it into a herringbone-soled padel shoe. The result is one of the most comfortable court shoes in the UK market under £80, and one of the few that genuinely justifies the purpose-built-for-padel claim.

The Gel insert in the rearfoot is the difference. Long sessions on the artificial turf at Padium or PadelStars leave a lot of court shoes feeling flat in the heel by the second set. The Gel-Padel Pro 5 stays cushioned through three sets, and the herringbone outsole grips reliably on both wet and dry surfaces. Lateral support around the midfoot is solid — you can plant hard for a bandeja without the upper folding under your foot.

The weight, at 330g in a UK 9, is on the lighter side for padel, which suits faster players. The 350g Adidas Barricade gives you more durability per gram, but you feel less locked-in. Asics historically run narrow, and the Pro 5 follows that pattern — wider feet should size up half a size or look at the Adidas instead.

Ideal owner is the 3.5+ player who plays two or more sessions a week and wants the comfort of Gel without paying £100+. Wrong owner is the wide-foot player or the casual once-a-fortnight player who would do fine in a generic £40 trainer.
