Quick Summary
- Shoes are the only thing that really matters — wear court shoes or flat-soled trainers with lateral support, never running shoes
- Clothing is anything comfortable and sporty — shorts/leggings, a breathable top, no jeans
- Indoor venues require non-marking soles — check before you arrive
- No pickleball-specific clothing exists — tennis, gym, or any sports clothing works fine
- Find UK courts via the RacketRise Court Finder
Pickleball has no dress code. Unlike tennis (where some clubs still enforce whites) or golf (where a collar is often required), pickleball venues in the UK are relaxed about what you wear. That said, some choices are meaningfully better than others — especially shoes, which can be the difference between enjoying your first session and rolling an ankle.
This guide covers what to wear from head to toe, for indoor and outdoor play, across all UK seasons.
Shoes: The Only Essential
Shoes are the one item where cutting corners causes injuries. Pickleball involves lateral movement — side shuffles, quick direction changes, split steps — and shoes built for forward motion (running shoes) don't support this. The result is rolled ankles and knee strain.
What to Wear
Best option: court shoes (tennis, badminton, or pickleball-specific). These have flat soles, lateral support, and non-marking rubber. See our best pickleball shoes UK guide for tested options.
Acceptable alternative: flat-soled gym trainers or cross-training shoes. Not as good as court shoes, but safe for your first few sessions.
Budget option: any flat-soled trainer with a wide base. Avoid anything with a thick, cushioned sole (like most Nike Air Max or Adidas Boost models) — these are unstable for lateral movement.
What Not to Wear
| Shoe Type | Why Not |
|---|---|
| Running shoes | Built for forward motion only, poor lateral support, high ankle-roll risk |
| Football boots / cleats | Wrong surface, too aggressive |
| Sandals / flip-flops | Obvious — no support, no protection |
| Brand-new shoes | Break them in for 2-3 wears before playing — blisters ruin sessions |
| Black-soled shoes (indoors) | Most indoor venues require non-marking soles |
Indoor Sole Requirement
Most UK sports halls and leisure centres require non-marking soles. This means white or light-coloured rubber soles — dark rubber can leave marks on wooden or synthetic floors. Check with your venue before arriving. Court shoes almost always have non-marking soles by default.
Clothing: What Works
There are no pickleball-specific clothing brands you need to buy. Standard sports clothing works perfectly.
Tops
Best: a moisture-wicking, breathable sports top (polyester or polyester blend). Any gym/running/tennis top works. Avoid cotton — it absorbs sweat and gets heavy and uncomfortable.
Acceptable: a regular T-shirt for casual play. Not ideal for long sessions in warm conditions, but fine for your first few games.
Bottoms
Best: athletic shorts (men) or shorts/skort/leggings (women). Choose something that allows full range of motion — you'll be lunging, squatting, and moving laterally.
Acceptable: tracksuit bottoms or joggers for outdoor play in cold weather.
Avoid: jeans (restrict movement, uncomfortable when sweating), cargo shorts (pockets catch on paddle), anything too loose that could trip you.
Layers (Outdoor / Cold Weather)
For outdoor UK play in autumn/winter:
- Base layer: moisture-wicking long-sleeve top
- Mid layer: lightweight fleece or quarter-zip
- Outer layer: windproof jacket (remove once warmed up)
You'll warm up quickly — dress so you can peel layers. Starting cold is better than overheating 15 minutes in.
Indoor vs Outdoor
| Factor | Indoor | Outdoor |
|---|---|---|
| Shoes | Non-marking soles required | Any court shoe |
| Temperature | Usually warm — dress light | Varies — layers recommended |
| Sun protection | Not needed | Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses |
| Rain gear | Not needed | Keep a towel and dry clothes in your bag |
| Surface | Usually smooth wood or synthetic | Concrete, tarmac, or sport surface |
Indoor play is simpler — sports kit and court shoes. Outdoor play requires more thought about weather, but the clothing principles are the same.
Seasonal Considerations
Summer (June-August)
Shorts, light breathable top, court shoes. Outdoor play needs sunscreen (SPF 30+), a cap or visor, and plenty of water. UV-protective sports tops are available and worth considering for regular outdoor players.
Autumn/Spring (Sept-Nov, March-May)
Layers. Start with a long-sleeve top and shorts or leggings. Bring a windproof jacket for outdoor play. Indoor sessions are warm — dress as for summer.
Winter (December-February)
Most UK pickleball moves indoors in winter. If playing outdoors, thermal base layers, tracksuit bottoms, and gloves (remove before playing) for the warm-up. Grip is harder in cold weather — warm your hands before the first serve.
For indoor winter play, standard summer kit works — sports halls are heated.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to buy pickleball-specific clothing?
No. There are no pickleball-specific clothing brands in the UK that offer anything different from standard sports clothing. Tennis, gym, running, or any athletic clothing works. The only pickleball-specific gear that matters is the paddle and balls.
What shoes should I wear for my first session?
Any flat-soled trainers or gym shoes. If you have tennis, badminton, or squash shoes, wear those. If you enjoy pickleball and plan to play regularly, invest in proper court shoes — see our shoes guide. For your first session, don't buy anything new.
Is there a dress code at UK pickleball venues?
No formal dress code at any UK venue we're aware of. The only universal requirement is non-marking soles for indoor courts. Some clubs request "appropriate sportswear" but that's standard — shorts and a T-shirt meet the bar.
Can I wear the same clothes for pickleball and padel?
Yes — the clothing requirements are identical. Shoes are interchangeable too (court shoes work for both). See our what to wear to padel guide for the padel-specific version.
What should I wear to pickleball in winter?
Indoors: same as summer (sports halls are heated). Outdoors: thermal base layer, tracksuit bottoms or leggings, windproof jacket for warm-up, court shoes. You'll warm up fast — dress to remove layers.
